Women’s basketball splits road trip out west

Prencis Harden continued her career best season as she helped lead the Owls back into the win column in a two game road split against UTEP and New Mexico State.

Harden scored a career high 39 points, the most by a Conference USA player in a game this season, in the Owls’ game against UTEP on Feb 20, eclipsing the 1000 career point mark.

The Owls entered the second half of the game trailing by a close 31-29, but would hit their stride in the second half, thanks to Harden scoring all 20 of the team’s third quarter points and a defensive effort that limited the Miners to seven points.

Harden grabbed a game-leading 14 rebounds to secure her 14th double-double of the season. She hit 13-14 free throw attempts as the Owls went 15-17 from the free throw line for the game.

The Owls scored 23 points off of turnovers, outscoring the Miners’ eight points, while also scoring more points in the paint (32-22).

The team would follow up this performance with a closely contested 61-57 loss against New Mexico State.

Harden scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to secure her 15th double-double of the season, tying the Owls’ single season record set by Sametria Gideon during the 2012-2013 season. Harden also joins Gideon in the 1000 point club, ranking eighth in career scoring for the team.

The Owls were led by Keyarah Berry who scored 21 points, shooting 9-11 (81.8%) from the field.

The Aggies scored 26 points off of turnovers, compared to the Owls’ eight, while also shooting 23-26 (88.5%) from the free throw line while the Owls shot 15-24 (62.5%).

The Owls shot 20-45 (44.4%) from the field while the Aggies shot 17-50 (34%). The Owls had the advantage in points scored in the paint (30-18) while also scoring 13 second chance points compared to the Aggies’ eight.

The Owls (10-16, 5-10) will conclude their regular season on a three game home stand against Florida International on Feb 27, Liberty on March 1 and Jacksonville State on March 8.

The team will be celebrating their annual Pink Day in their matchup against the Panthers, in which they will be raising money for breast cancer research and patient care. In their final matchup against the Gamecocks, the Owls will be honoring their senior players for their Senior Day celebration.
