Club Life: Eco Owls

Discover how Eco Owls brings ecological awareness, community and revival of the love of nature back to Kennesaw State!

At Kennesaw State University, numerous student organizations work tirelessly to enhance campus life and drive positive change. Among these, EcoOwls stands out for its steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability on campus.

However, despite these significant contributions, the group often operates under the radar of ambiguity. The need for recognition was explored through an interview with Gloria Frimpong, a dedicated member who graduated in the Spring of 2024.

A Platform for Environmental Dialogue

EcoOwls was established to bring awareness to issues that affect our climate and sustain a healthy environment through projects and public service, but it also provides an outlet.

“EcoOwls provides a place for people to discuss all sorts of environmental issues that affect campus and the outer world,” Gloria said.

The mission highlights a dual focus: addressing both local and global climate challenges while fostering a community of environmentally conscious students. EcoOwls creates a space where meaningful discussions and innovative ideas that help maintain our world are encouraged.

Initiatives and Impacts

One of the EcoOwls’ notable projects was known as the Great Allatoona Clean Up project, in which volunteers from EcoOwls helped clean up debris and litter off the coast of the Allatoona Lake.

Its ambition shows EcoOwls’ approach to community problems and their reliability in making the environment a safer and cleaner place for animals to thrive without disruptions from human waste.

Another section of the EcoOwls known as the Action Committee plays a crucial role in local environmental politics, with members attending city council meetings and discussing ecological health in the Kennesaw and Metro Atlanta areas.

Gloria praised the group’s cleanup efforts, saying, “EcoOwls does a phenomenal job of cleaning up places around Kennesaw, like Frey Road, the Arboretum, and Lake Allatoona.”

Beyond planning projects, EcoOwls makes a tangible impact through hands-on activities. These volunteer opportunities allow students to directly contribute to the community’s well-being in their general area and foster a sense of environmental stewardship.

Leadership and Personal Development

EcoOwls also provides valuable Leadership opportunities. Members can create presentations on environmental topics they’re passionate about and share them with the organization. This recognition motivates current members and attracts new students looking to engage in similar environmental activities.

“By standing out through constant attendance and volunteering, they can be featured on the Instagram page, serving as inspiration for other students,” Gloria said.

Moreover, EcoOwls connects students with green industry professionals. Guest speakers, including alumni who have secured environmental jobs, share their career journeys and offer practical advice. “I was able to apply to a sustainability internship because of one of those meetings,” Gloria shared, emphasizing the organization’s role in helping members build toward future careers.

The Need for Greater Recognition

Despite its significant contributions, EcoOwls often isn’t given the light it deserves. The group’s dedication to fostering environmental awareness, initiating impactful projects, and supporting student leadership and career development deserves broader acknowledgment. Recognizing EcoOwls’ achievements would not only honor their efforts, but ensure the support they rightfully deserve.
