The new committee will deal with issues including campus safety and legislation to aid students.
Kennesaw State University’s Student Government Association announced their board members for the Procedural Operations Committee at a meeting on Sept. 6.
The committee is chaired by SGA Attorney General Emory Roy with four additional board members: Student Life Director Emily Chauvin, Diversity and Inclusion Director Yakinni Martin, Senator Taejah Goode and FLIGHT26 Senator Maya Munammar. Their appointment to the board will last for the rest of the 2023-2024 SGA term.
The purpose of the committee is to oversee all bylaw changes and any legislation or amendments. They accept any amendments proposed by voting members of the SGA.
They are also responsible for conducting a yearly review of the KSU SGA Constitution and Bylaws. The Procedural Operations present all their amendments and revisions at the bi-weekly general body meetings per a statement from Roy.
Roy was appointed by Brewer, in part because of her previous experience as an SGA senator for the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as her tenure as Vice Chair for the KSU Republican Party. The Procedural Operations Committee was established last year in the SGA bylaws under the prior Johnson administration.
When asked about the committee’s strengths, Brewer argued its structure was its greatest quality.
“I like the structure of the procedural operations committee, especially if you have a good attorney general,” Brewer said. “We will be able to do a lot with it because of how structured it is.”
Brewer cited the revision to an unclear bylaw as an example of the Procedural Operations Committee’s success. The previous bylaw made no stipulation as to who would lead SGA if both the President and Vice President were absent, whereas the revision grants leadership to the Treasurer.
This committee will also directly oversee legislation and support proposals that will impact KSU students and campus life overall. The proposals aimed to increase the proactivity of SGA and improve the conditions of KSU students, according to Brewer.
Another responsibility of Procedural Operations is the promotion of initiatives to help achieve the goals of the current administration. Among the initiatives are better campus safety, increased transparency and ratifying the USG Mental Health Mega-Resolution.
Campus safety is a primary concern of the Brewer-Harrison administration and something the committee plans to tackle. The initiative has proposed measures to increase safety on both campuses, including more security cameras, improved lighting and a safety shuttle to provide a service for students who feel unsafe walking on campus. There is also a push for stronger patrolling of off-campus housing in response to students feeling unsafe.
While the Procedural Operations Committee is still in its relative infancy, Brewer still views it as essential to the SGA ecosystem, and KSU in general.
“I personally call it the most important committee in SGA: all of the committees are important, but Procedural Operations is really where the work gets done,” Brewer said.
SGA meetings are held bi-weekly on Wednesdays in several locations, with students allowed to sit in on those meetings.
