Blake Wehunt, a pitcher for Kennesaw State, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox as the 268th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft in July.
Wehunt spent his junior year at Kennesaw State as a Friday-night pitcher for the Owls.
Appearing in 14 games in the spring 2023 season, Wehunt posted a 4.83 ERA over a total of 76 1/3 innings pitched with 80 strikeouts, 23 walks and a .279 batting average against him.
Wehunt recorded a personal high of nine strikeouts against Jacksonville University on April 28, 2023, and tied his career high of seven innings pitched against Lipscomb University on May 5, 2023.
At the end of the team’s season, the pitcher had a 4-4 record and attracted the eyes of Red Sox recruiters. Wehunt is the first right-handed pitcher to be drafted from KSU since the Cincinnati Reds drafted AJ Moore in 2018.
Wehunt continues the streak of KSU players being drafted to the MLB for 15 consecutive years and is the 73rd draft pick from KSU in the school’s history.
He was also named ASUN Pitcher of the Week after the team’s win against the University of Michigan this season.
