On Sunday, Feb. 5, the women’s tennis reigned victorious after a 4-3 match against UAB at home which extended their record to 2-0.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the women today,” KSU Director of Tennis Matt Emery said. “We let the doubles point slip away, but UAB also stepped up and played really well at the end, so credit to them.”
Initially, KSU trailed behind UAB in the doubles point. On court three, Ji Youn Lee and Sofia Pinedo teamed up earning a 7-5 win for the Owls. UAB posed strong competition for KSU as Taylor Dean and Sofia Madrid suffered a tough loss. Izabelle Persson and Sophia Unger strived to fight back as well but were ultimately defeated by Blazers’ contestants.
KSU bounced back gaining momentum with the singles match. The Owls went 4-3 against the Blazers. On court one, Lee took control and won the match with a 6-1, 6-2 score. Dean added to the domination by winning 6-3,2-6,6-5 on court two.
Unger earned another singles match for KSU, finishing 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 while Pinedo clinched the fourth and final win needed to defeat the UAB Blazers. Pinedo secured the singles point with a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 win.
With this win against the Blazers, the Owls gain their second wind in the all-time series.
“What I loved most about today’s match was the confidence and belief we showed at the end,” said Emery. “That belief is earned by putting in the hard work in practice, and it paid off today.”
KSU will take its talents to College of Charleston on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1:00 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
