Four more individuals have been charged in relation to the U Club on Frey incident that occurred Sunday, Jan. 26, bringing the total number of suspects apprehended to seven.
“None of the identified alleged perpetrators are KSU students,” KSU Assistant Vice President of Strategic Communication Tammy Demel said.
On Wednesday, Feb. 26, 17-year-old Zavian Jermaine Stevenson and 21-year-old Qwantavis Jeffery Lamar Evans were arrested in Paulding County and brought to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. The next day, 19-year-old Qwantrell Jarell Evans was also found in Paulding County and taken to the Cobb jail.
The seventh suspect, 18-year-old Joseph Michael Rodriguez, was moved from the Paulding County Jail to Cobb Friday, Feb. 28. Two more people are still wanted by the Kennesaw Police Department.
“This is still an ongoing and very active investigation,” Officer Scott Luther of the Kennesaw Police Department said. “If anyone has information regarding this incident, please call Detective [Brian] Moon at 770-429-4533.”
Luther could not release additional details of this case due to its ongoing status.
Demel confirmed that one of the victims attacked was a KSU student, although she did not respond to a further inquiry on the student attacked.
The first three individuals charged in relation to the incident and were booked into the Cobb detention center as of Saturday, Feb. 15, according to the Sentinel.
All seven suspects face five potential felony charges, including armed robbery, aggravated assault with intent to rob and aggravated assault with murderous intent, according to the AJC. They also face seven potential misdemeanor charges.
The suspects were accused of beating two male victims and stealing the cellphone of one of the male victims at the apartment complex where KSU students are known to live, according to the Sentinel.
“Due to the number of assailants, kicks and punches to the head and neck area of said victim, it could have reasonably killed her,” Kennesaw police warrants said.
Although previously stated in the Sentinel that a woman suffered a near-death beating during the attack, Luther said that was not the case.
“During the incident, there was apparently a fight that took place, but there was no ‘near-death beating,'” Luther said. “That victim of the fight apparently refused transport to the hospital.”
This statement contradicts the comments made in the police warrants.
Luther advised KSU students to take better personal safety precautions in order to prevent attacks like the one at U Club from occurring.
“Stop having unauthorized parties at student housing, especially ones that involve alcohol and illegal drugs,” Luther said. “If they do have a get-together, do not post it on social media and do not allow uninvited guests in by keeping the doors locked.”
Demel advised that students use the LiveSafe app to stay safe.
“[The LiveSafe app can] allow students to contact both 911 and the KSUPD directly if they are in need of assistance and provides detailed guidance to inform individuals of how to respond to a range of emergencies,” Demel said.
