For the second consecutive season, the Kennesaw State women’s golf team won the Atlantic Sun Conference title, beating the field by 13 strokes in Braselton, Georgia, from Sunday, April 21 to April 23.
An efficient second round helped the Owls separate KSU from competitors as the team finished with a three-day total of 34-over 910. KSU went 2-under on Monday, highlighted by senior Medy Thavong’s 4-under performance.
Thavong finished in first place overall at 4-over, contributing with nine birdies and a chip-in eagle during the tournament. The top three individual finishers of the event were all represented by KSU.
“On the golf course we have a legacy of being successful at this point,” head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. “We’ve got three graduating seniors who have really built the foundation.”
That success Brinsmead eludes to has been largely due to the consistent recruiting brought to KSU since she took over as head coach in 2007. Brinsmead has now led the women’s golf program to its fourth conference title in its history.
Finishing right behind Thavong was senior Roanne Tomlinson at 7-over and redshirt junior Clara Aveling at 8-over. The conference title marked the third win of the season for the Owls, which is a program record.
Coming into this season, the team faced a smaller roster than most teams with just five players. Despite the limited squad, the talent of the team illuminated as the Owls remained competitive in most events this season.
After winning the tournament, the Owls are now ranked at No. 35 in the nation and will be heading to Opelika, Alabama, to play in the NCAA Regionals hosted by Auburn from May 6 to May 8.
