The women’s basketball team earned its fifth-straight win in a 66-56 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology in an ASUN Conference game on Feb. 8.
Senior guard Deandrea Sawyers scored 20 points and tallied 11 rebounds, while redshirt junior guard Kelly Dulkiski added 15 points. Freshman forward Carlotta Gianolla also contributed 10 points for the Owls.
Kennesaw State University set a program record with its fifth-straight ASUN Conference victory. The win also moved KSU into a tie with Jacksonville University for third place in the standings.
The third quarter has been the Achilles heel for the Owls all season long, but KSU outscored NJIT by eight points, earning a 14-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
“That was the best third quarter we’ve had this year,” said head coach Agnus Berenato. “We talked about it in the locker room because the third quarter has been our nemesis.”
Sawyers also came up big following halftime as she sparked KSU’s second-half run. She totaled eight of her 11 rebounds in the last 20 minutes of the game.
The Owls were productive from behind the three-point line for the second consecutive game as they made 10 of 26 field-goal attempts. Dulkoski scored all her points from long range and shut down NJIT’s Kelly Guarino, the Highlanders’ top three-point shooter, who Dulkoski held to just two baskets from behind the arc.
“I was really proud of the team that they were able to come out and get it going,” Berenato said.
KSU travels to Fort Myers to take on Florida Gulf Coast University at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, seeking a sixth win in a row.
