Struggling to overcome the murder of her son, single mother Lila takes matters into her own hands when avenging her son’s death in the film “Lila & Eve.” Directed by Charles Stone III, known for his film “Drumline,” Viola Davis and Jennifer Lopez star in this action-packed thriller as two grief-stricken mothers who join forces to seek justice for their kids who were murdered in the streets of Atlanta.
Lila, played by Davis, finds herself at a crossroads when police fail to thoroughly investigate the death of her 18-year-old son, who was killed in a drive-by shooting. Unable to move on, Lila seeks out therapy and joins a support group for mothers of murdered children. There she meets Eve, played by Lopez, a group member who has also lost her daughter to street violence.
Eve and Lila confide in one another over the loss of their children and soon become friends. When investigators express no interest in the case of Lila’s son, Eve urges Lila to seek justice and track down her son’s killers. Together the two mothers embark down a path of bloody vengeance and revenge.
I’m not surprised that this film was initially released on the big screens, especially when a movie features big-name actresses like Davis and Lopez as lead characters. But “Lila & Eve” is plainly just a Lifetime movie in disguise and is quite lackluster at times. Nonetheless, the stellar performance by Davis, as well as the unforeseen plot twist towards the end of the movie saved this film from being mediocre and average.
