The Loft review: Boggs

“The Loft,” staring Karl Urban and James Marsden, is an interesting, modern take on the traditional murder-mystery genre, but with a cheap twist ending. The film is about five roommates who find a dead girl in the secret loft that they share. The story of the film very slowly unfolds through flash-forwards to police interrogation rooms and flash-backs to social interactions between the five roommates and their wives. Although the film starts by suggesting that one of the five roommates committed the murder, about half-way through the movie they throw out this narrative and turn this from a somewhat interesting “who-done-it” film into just a cheap twist for the sake of having a twist film. The acting was decent and although there was little character development, the five roommates were distinct enough. The film promised a lot and delivered little, but I still enjoyed it for the most part. I wouldn’t give the film any awards and I don’t think you will see it in your film class anytime soon, but it could be a fun flick for a casual night in.
