Has Drake Bounced Back?

The popularly known lover boy, dropped his collaborated album with Partynextdoor, on February 14. With 92.4 million streams and counting, Drake talks about sex, finding love, and his foe in Some Sexy Songs 4 U.

Despite a few good songs, as a fan of the artist, I was not satisfied with this album.

The album starts off strong with CN Tower. I immediately loved the instrumentals and the lyrics. It almost reminded me of some of his old songs. As the album continues, my ratings for the songs went down in number. The second track of the album, Moth Balls, had a great beat. I thought Partynextdoor’s verses in between Drake’s was a nice touch to the entire song. However, the lyrics weren’t the best. The fourth song, Crying in Chanel, was not executed well. Although starting it off poorly, the beat was carried at the end of the song, making it end well.

Partynextdoor is well versed in the RnB genre of music. His songs usually have a late-night vibe to them. In the sixth song on the album, Deeper, it had an old classic Partynextdoor vibe. The lyrics were meaningful and well produced with the instrumentals. Second to CN tower, this was one of my favorites. I loved how it started, and it had a Valentine’s Day touch to it.

Prior to listening to the album, I assumed and almost expected the album to sound like the lover boy Drake we all know. Listening to it made the title of the album sound misleading, because 90% of the songs were not close to “sexy.” Coming in as the thirteen song on the album, Drake loses my attention with Meet your padre. I was confused with the made-up accent and forced Spanish speaking. I want to assume this was an experimental song that he was trying to have fun with. There is no shame in doing so because I believe artists should always experiment with their sounds and branch out from their usual genre. However, this could have stayed off the album.

Nokia had a great rhythm to it. It reminded me of summer cookouts. In the song, Drake is repeatedly saying, “Where the function?” which sounds captivating and memorable. I also liked the fact that the song was named after an old popular phone. It flooded me with memories.

In the tenth song, Gimme me a hug, Drake is clearly responding to his foe, although indirectly, and without saying names. I loved the choir in the beginning of the song. I think this is one of the few that gets a pass to my playlist.

Out of the twenty-one songs, I genuinely loved six of them. Hence, my unsatisfaction with the album. I think my expectations were set too high. Additionally, the songs did not transition well into each other, and there wasn’t any growth or “new” lyrics, compared to previous songs and albums.

Drake and Partynextdoor had an opportunity to create a masterpiece that didn’t live up to its potential. Although I felt the same way about the album after the second listen, I think over time, I might grow to like a few more songs.
