Softball takes three of five in third home tournament

The Owls took a majority of five games in their final non-conference tournament at Bailey Park last weekend.

The Owls began the tournament by facing Rider on Friday night.

Rider scored early in the first inning on a fielder’s choice, giving the Broncs a 1-0 lead.

The score stayed at 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh, when Briana Bumbalough hit an RBI double, tying the game at one.

The game would go on to extra innings, when Rider hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth and take a 2-1 lead. The Owls failed to score, giving the Broncs a 2-1 victory.

Saturday’s action began with the Owls taking on St John’s.

After a scoreless first, the Red Storm struck hard, scoring four runs in the second inning. Kennesaw State answered with a run of its own to make the score 4-1 after the first two.

St. Johns scored once more in the fourth, increasing their lead to a score of 5-1.

The Owls scored in the sixth on an RBI double by Macie Howes, but the offense couldn’t complete the comeback, resulting in a 5-2 loss.

In Saturday’s nightcap, KSU was looking to bounce back from its 0-2 start to the weekend, facing Saint Louis.

To start the game’s scoring, the Owls went up 2-0 at the end of the first.

The Billikens quickly responded, exploding for five runs and taking a 5-2 lead after the first two innings.

KSU got back on the runs column with an Ava Guzowski home run in the third and tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth on an RBI single by Hannah Harvey.

Each team scored once more, and the game went to extra innings tied at six.

The Billikens failed to score, and the Owls walked it off on a Lexie Shaver single, securing a 7-6 victory for the Owls.

Sunday began with the Owls facing East Tennessee State.

KSU set the tone immediately, exploding for four runs in the first inning, led by RBI doubles from Shaver and Harvey.

The Buccaneers answered with two runs of their own in the second, but this would be the only scoring their offense would be able to find.

The Owls continued their red hot offense, scoring at least one run in every inning, leading to a 10-2 victory in a game that was concluded early after the fifth inning.

The tournament concluded with a rematch for KSU with Rider.

Rider got their offense going early, putting across two runs in the first. The Owls offense answered with a Guzowski homer in the second, making the score 2-1 after the first two innings.

The pitching of KSU kept the Broncs offense stagnant and the Owls scored two more in the third, giving them a 3-2 lead which was the score when the game was called in the fifth inning.

The Owls will begin conference play on Friday when they travel to face Liberty.
