The Year of the Female Artists

How 2024 was shaped by Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.

2024 was a year of stupendous music and high achievement for women in the music industry.

Taylor Swift– who has been a global name for almost two decades- has accomplished the longest tour with a skyrocketing 2.07 billion dollars in revenue. The concerts were a global phenomenon that brought millions of swifties together.

The concerts started a tradition of making friendship bracelets and sharing them with each other. Fans would dress up in their best outfits that would fit the ‘eras tour aesthetic’, which boasted of bright colors and sequins.

Taylor Swift also released her 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was filled with heartbreaking and emotional songs that were very different from anything she has done before as she reflects on her life as it is now.

Olivia Rodrigo also made a name around the world with her angsty tour,  Guts. At only 21, she has garnered a large following and her own style that fans were quick to follow.

Rodrigo has established angsty teen girl music about heartbreak and growing up that has allowed women to feel accepted for their flaws and allowed them to be angry at the world.

Rodrigo has also been compared to Taylor Swift and she could very well be the next female phenomenon.

However, Sabrina Carpenter would say otherwise. Jumping into the music scene with enviable style, Carpenter has pushed herself to the very top and secured a name for herself.

With overly feminine energy and a girl-boss mentality, Carpenter has racked up hits on Spotify and established the ‘girly vibe’ with bows and skirts while taking on a strong persona that means just because you like to dress very feminine does not mean you’re a pushover or submitting to the patriarchy.

Sabrina Carpenter has made it feel like it’s acceptable to wear skirts and favor pink, and it does not mean that you’re weak, soft, or a feminist, but an advocate by wearing what you like regardless of the stigmatism behind it. Women have been worried about being stereotyped as weak and following the idea of the patriarchy if they wear what is considered ‘too girly.’

Carpenter breaks that belief.

Chappell Roan, however, stands out on this list because she does not fit the typical pop artist ideal. She wears unique clothes, heavy makeup, and large hair that mimics a drag queen.

Her music shares the same upbeat and feminine energy as the rest of the women listed, which helped her soar her way to stardom. Her music is considered “gay pop,” but with a similar feel to typical pop music. Her songs have managed to spread worldwide to broader audiences and have become a sensation that many people have fallen in love with.

Regardless of what music genre people love, 2024 was shaped by these powerful and passionate women who are not afraid to go after what they want.
