KSU adopts a new version of DUO mobile.
Students at Kennesaw State University may have noticed a new version of DUO Mobile when logging into school platforms.
Previously, users had to enter a password provided by the app after inputting their login information. Now, they approve it on the app.
“It’s simpler,” KSU student Ashley Nguyen said.
For KSU students, DUO is built-in when signing into web applications such as D2L and Owl Express. Students log into these websites to access their grades, submit assignments and more.
DUO is the widely-used multi-factor authentication app that protects education records from hackers looking to steal or sell their information.
Recently, the application underwent new updates, and it was up to the users to decide if they preferred the new or old version.
DUO’s main user demographic is students and professors, as several colleges and universities use the application to protect their grades, finances, emails and other information. This security aspect and its integration within systems across the University System of Georgia requires every student to use DUO.
According to Duo.com, users automatically receive a push notification and verify their identity through that method. In the past, DUO gave users a choice between a phone call, a push notification and a generated passcode rather than selecting the method for them.
“I like the new update, it makes signing in faster for me,” KSU junior Nia Glenn said.
DUO did not completely dismiss every old feature they had. The app still has other options besides the push notification option to verify your identity, you now have to select them instead of the default push notification.
Users can still choose the app-generated password option or phone call button, or if none of those features work for you, a bypass code from your IT help desk is accessible.
According to Cisco.com, DUO allows secure access from any device while protecting you and your organization’s private information.
With the university’s relatively positive feedback regarding the change to their multi-factor authentication, problems may arise for users who recently changed devices or phone numbers.
The app may have trouble validating users if they’re on a different device, but utilizing the IT button is an option for solving that potential problem within the app.
