Review: Benson Boone’s “Fireworks & Rollerblades”

On April 5, 2024, Benson Boone, 21, released his highly anticipated, 15-song, pop debut album called Fireworks & Rollerblades” which features two earlier released singles.

It has songs that make you want to cry in bed and some that you cannot help dancing to.

After becoming popular on TikTok and Instagram, Boone has gained a listener base over months, being especially popular with the ladies. There he teases the songs before release.

Many of his songs have become audio’s used on social media like “Beautiful Things,” “In The Stars” and “Ghost Town.” Some sad and others upbeat.

Throughout the album, Boone explores a variety of emotions from romantic and longing in “Forever and a Day”, to despair in “My Greatest Fear”, to anger in “What Do You Want” and reflective like in “Ghost Town.”

While many of the songs use a similar formula starting slow and building pace, Boone’s raspy vocals execute the idea every time.

The album, mostly ballads rather than pop anthems, has religious themes referencing faith and purpose.

In an article by Jen Long in May 2023, Boone explains that he did not get involved in music until high school and eventually appeared on American Idol, however, he dropped out in the top 24 because he was unsure whether or not to go to college or pursue music.

But through his social media platform, he got the attention of Dan Reynolds, the front man for Imagine Dragons, who helped him learn to write music and understand the art.

His presence on social media is important to him and views it as a medium to connect with his fans.

“It’s not like there’s a certain way to do social media or an exact right or an exact wrong,” Boone said in aninterview with Creator Studio. “I think you just figure out your lane, and what you like, and then give it your all.”

He quickly gained a passionate fanbase that led to his first song “Ghost Town” being released and his first EP, “Pulse.”

The “Fireworks & Rollerblades” album comes right after Boone started a world tour recently and played at The Tabernacle on Thursday, April 18 in Atlanta.

On Boone’s Instagram, he has already started teasing his second album.

Based on the performance of “Fireworks & Rollerblades” and his prior work, it seems that listeners are waiting for the announcement in anticipation.
