Malik Hussie, Simon Seid and Kali Terza made school history at the Clemson Invitational.
Men and Women’s Track and Field started their first meet of the season off with a bang on Jan.12-13 at the Clemson University Indoor Track and Field Complex.
New school record holders—senior Sprinter Malik Hussie, sophomore Pole Vaulter Simon Seid along with WWE NIL signee Kali Terza kicked off their first meet of the season making KSU history.
Hussie broke the school record for the 300-meter with a new personal record of 34.08 seconds placing 10th in the meet overall–ironically breaking his fellow teammate and twin brother Tyriq Hussie‘s KSU record of 34.21 seconds in the Clemson Opener set on Dec. 3, 2021.
Seid cleared the bar with an outstanding PR of 5.22 meters (17’1.5) and took first place in the Pole Vault, while he simultaneously broke Jack Rhea‘s ASUN Indoor Championship school record of 5.21 meters set back in Feb. 24, 2021.
Terza broke her school record of 19.00 meters (62’4″) set in 2023 with a new PR of 19.23 meters (63’4.75″)
“Fun to see school records fall this weekend,” Director of KSU Track and Field Cale McDaniel said. “We got the chance to have a lot of newcomers and young people come this weekend and are certainly off to a solid start. Excited to get back to work this week and make some adjustments moving forward.”
There were multiple PRs made across the board and many instances where the Owls competiting against one another impressively managed to place back-to-back in the same event in the finals.
This goes to showcase the athletes’ abilities to create a domino effect on one another and provide each other with the push they need while training collectively.
Top performers in the men’s Triple Jump consisted of sophomore Justin Campbell, 14.71 meters, junior Tevon Shulter, with a new PR of 14.48 meters and David Olusanya, 14.42m, impressively took sixth, seventh and eighth place overall in the meet.
Shot Put performers Anthony Harrison and Mitchell Ratley finished neck-and-neck, placing fourth and fifth overall with 15.99 meters and 14.68 meters respectively.
Freshman Keondre Glover opened up his first collegiate meet with a PR of 1.95 meters (6’4.75″) taking home fifth in the High Jump.
On the women’s side, sophomore Kalee Brown and fellow freshman teammate Julia Versluis battled for fourth place in the High Jump, in which they tied and cleared the bar at 1.65 meters (5’5).
A toss of 12.78 meters (41’11.25″) from junior Eriana Sanford set her on the podium for second place in the Shot Put.
Impressive performances in Sprints comprised of 800m runner Britney Chatfield‘s opening time of 2 minutes, 16.60 seconds and a new PR in the 600 with a time of 1:36.79, where she managed to place eighth in both events.
Accomplishments in the 3K race consisted of a new PR for senior Natalie Cummings with a time of 9:51.78—followed by training partners freshman Madigan Wallace, 10.05.37, and freshman Madison Seiler, with a PR of 10:07.08. These athletes placed second, fifth and sixth in the finals respectively.
The Owls will return to Clemson for the Bob Pollock Invitational on Jan. 26 in hopes of beating these records.
