Georgia legislators signed a resolution requesting the secretary of state to remove the former president from the ballot in Georgia, basing their request on the 14th Amendment.
Georgia House Democrats recently filed a House Resolution requesting that Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger keep former President Donald Trump off of Georgia ballots, less than two months before the state primary.
More than a dozen Democrats signed on to the resolution, which argues that the former president is ineligible to run due to the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause, according to a GPB article.
The resolution implores the secretary of state to, “keep Donald Trump off any and all ballots related to the nomination of candidates for or election to the Office of President of the United States as he is disqualified from holding office pursuant to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment…”
This resolution has been filed following efforts in multiple states to disqualify former President Trump, as both the Colorado Supreme Court and the Maine secretary of state disqualified the former president under the same clause.
On Jan. 4, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal to the Colorado Supreme Court ruling, which could impact the former president’s nationwide eligibility depending on the outcome, according to CBS News.
Arguments in that appeals case will take place Feb. 8, with a ruling likely to be released before Super Tuesday, March 5, when many states hold their primary elections.
The Georgia presidential primary elections for both Democrats and Republicans will be held on March 12.
