The pop star meets the “football” player duo has become a generational classic.
There is a pattern in pop culture with sports players coupling up with pop stars and Taylor Swift has fed into this pattern perfectly with Travis Kelce.
Travis Kelce is a Tight End for the Kansas City Chiefs, has won two Super Bowls and stars in the top-rated sports podcast that he started with his brother. Kelce is known for his humor and interactions with his nieces. When the Kelce brothers took on the 2023 Super Bowl on opposing teams, their popularity grew and Tiktok started a debate on who the hotter brother is.
Travis Kelce took the popularity of his podcast and announced in July that he wanted to give Taylor Swift a friendship bracelet with his number. Fans went wild shipping Swift and Kelce referring to them as “Traylor.”
Taylor Swift is a musician with 10 albums and four re-recordings of previous albums, the masters of which were once famously sold to music manager Scooter Braun. Swift has made an impact through breakup songs, economy-boosting tours and developing a dedicated fanbase, referred to as “Swifties.” The Swifties have become obsessed with Kelce and Swift, even watching football games for a chance to see Swift.
But doesn’t this pairing sound oddly familiar to the combination of Posh Spice and David Beckham?
In 1997, it was announced that pop star Victoria Adams and soccer star David Beckham were dating. Adams was traveling around the world as Posh Spice in the Spice Girls singing songs that were relating to young girls of the generation. Beckham had a natural talent on the field as a midfielder for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, Milan and captained the England national team. Beckham’s life was constantly in the media since he was 13 attending Manchester United’s practices.
The world responded to their dating extremely well, but the fans were not the nicest to the Beckhams. After their first son, Brooklyn, was born in 1999, the couple received death threats because they blamed Beckham for not winning the World Cup.
Now, the Beckhams live in a countryside house with their four kids and have recently released a documentary series on Netflix showcasing their relationship over the past 25 years and Beckham’s career.
This has shown that maybe every generation needs the sports player-pop star duo to bring more couples together. Since Kelce and Swift started dating, girlfriends have been asking more about football and men have been asking more about Taylor Swift.
This duo has been seen throughout the 2000s with Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland and Dallas Cowboy Roy Williams; and R&B singer Ciara and former Seahawk Russell Wilson.
Maybe society is destined to love the duality of these couples, but we will see where Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce end up.
