OPINION: Students should know that stigma around mental illness is not true

The Kennesaw State Health Promotion Wellness Center is located in the Betty Siegel Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Kennesaw State students should be aware of the societal stigma around mental illnesses in order to globally improve mental health issues by seeking therapeutic resources.

People often associate mental health care with a societal stigmatized perspective. According to Psychiatry.org, nearly 50% of people experiencing mental illnesses do not receive the help they need because they feel their experience is stigmatized.

Mental health disorders are extremely common among young people. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services estimates that 49.5% of adolescents experience mental health disorders.

While adolescents are developing, emotional and mental difficulties can arise. The HHS also says that early intervention is key in preventing these difficulties from worsening. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, people should seek help when they notice certain symptoms. These symptoms include low energy, changes in weight, difficulty sleeping, avoidance of social activities and more.

Students can easily access KSU’s Counseling & Psychological Servicesonline to schedule a consultation for both therapy and psychiatry.

A review done by The Lancet regarding public stigma says that while members of the public may comprehend the components of mental illness, they still view those who suffer negatively because of the stigma around mental illnesses in general.

2020 survey done by Hopelab and Well Being Trust says interacting with other people with mental illnesses is the best way to reduce stigma.

People should work together to create a culture of acceptance and tolerance for those experiencing mental health conditions in order to de-stigmatize mental illness.
