The Peak is Kennesaw State’s student-run magazine and this February marked the return of its print issues since stopping print editions in spring 2020.
Under the new direction of Editor-In-Chief Jackson Morris, The Peak staff printed last month’s issue on Feb. 23. The magazine is part of KSU Student Media along with The Sentinel and Owl Radio.
Included in this issue were articles about Lunar New Year, Black History Month and ways to deal with seasonal depression. Student Life editor Anastasia Gonzalez, Health editor Emma McNaughton, Lead Copy editor Donavan McLean and Layout editor Morgan Wiley put the entire magazine together with guidance from Morris and commitment to the product. Morris allows an array of articles and fosters creativity within his staff.
Morris joined The Peak in Aug. 2021 finding himself the sole member and immediately began working on building The Peak’s team that exists today. He interviewed writers and editors throughout the fall semester and succeeded in revamping the Peak from its hiatus of two years. The current team began production in mid-January and the final product took about a month to produce.
When the issue was ready to go public, Morris drove to and from the University of West Georgia where the copies were being printed, personally delivering nearly 2,000 magazines to Kennesaw’s campus.
The next morning on Feb. 24, The Peak staff handed out copies to passersby and Morris placed stacks of them around campus. These stacks can be found in the Carmichael Student Center across from the vending machines and on stands outside classroom buildings.
According to Morris, the contents of The Peak are “for the students and by the students.” All editors and staff writers are students working to create content that their peers will enjoy, especially since many of the articles are about students and their organizations. He makes a point of his interest in featuring clubs and highlighting students to bring out the specific experience of being a KSU student.
“If you have any interest in it at all…it’s your right as a paying college student to get involved,” Morris said. Whether it be applying for the magazine or being interviewed for a feature piece, there are many ways to get involved with KSU Student Media.
Morris says that new issues of The Peak will be released every four to six weeks.
