The Cobb County Police Department issued an arrest warrant Thursday, Oct. 10, for the man accused of killing Kennesaw State student Oluwafemi Oyerinde at the Stadium Village apartment complex Sunday, Oct. 6.
CCPD is charging Kashman Rael Thomas with murder and two counts each of aggravated assault.
Thomas is accused of killing 18-year-old Oyerinde Sunday at around 11:30 a.m. Two other people were also shot and wounded that day —18-year-old Khalil Bennett and 18-year-old Jarius Bonner.
Neither Bennett nor Bonner was a KSU student.
Thomas is not in police custody as of Thursday afternoon, according to the AJC.
Later in the afternoon Oct. 6, investigators discovered 159 grams of what they suspected to be marijuana in Thomas’ room after a search was conducted. Thomas was also charged with possessing over an ounce of marijuana, according to the AJC.
CCPD determined that the shooting was over a dispute that began prior to Sunday.
WSB-TV reported that KSU spokeswoman Tammy Demel confirmed Oyerinda was a KSU student.
“It is with profound sadness that the University confirms the deceased victim, 18-year-old Oluwafemi Oyerinde, was an enrolled student at Kennesaw State University,” Demel said.
Oyerinde was a resident of Lawrenceville, Georgia. According to the AJC, his family said he was a freshman mechanical engineering major. He graduated from high school in May.
An alert was not sent out to KSU students as the Stadium Village apartments are not part of the university.
Multiple incidents have been reported at the Stadium Village complex prior to Oct. 6.
In March 2017, the Sentinel reported two 21-year-olds shot at a party at the apartments. Both survived.
According to the AJC, Stadium Village residents reported a stabbing in January, gunshots were reported in January and February and an armed robbery was reported in May.
Students who live at the complex have also spoken about the various security issues Stadium Village faces, including a broken gate for the parking garage and a lack of cameras and security guards.
According to the Stadium Village website, Stadium Village is “Kennesaw’s ideal student living community.” The complex is luxury, off-campus housing for KSU students.
A student-led candlelight vigil will be held for Oyerinde Monday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Legacy Gazebo on the Kennesaw campus.
