Kennesaw State Police Chief Edward Stephens sent a campus safety alert about a student who had an unlicensed firearm on campus in an email to faculty, staff and students on Thursday, Aug. 30.
According to the email, KSU police conducted a “student welfare check” after receiving a call from the student’s parent on Wednesday, Aug. 29. It says that officers were able to quickly locate the student on campus and “assess the student’s well-being.” and that the student was later transported for another evaluation.
Stephens said an unlicensed handgun was found in the student’s backpack upon investigation. KSU Police have obtained an arrest warrant for possession of an unlicensed firearm, and it states in the email that the warrant will be served “upon the student’s release.”
KSU Police said they have found no evidence to believe the student made any threats to anyone on campus or to the community despite rumors on social media, according to the email.
“Working with our law enforcement partners in the community, we were able to quickly help a student in distress and ensure the safety of our campus,” Stevens said.
There are two reports in the university’s daily crime log from Wednesday evening — one is a weapons offense for carrying a concealed weapon and one is a report of a “demented person.” The same case number is listed for both of the incidents, and the log states that the location of these incidents was in the Commons on the Kennesaw campus.
University Spokeswoman Tammy DeMel said the KSUPD “have no additional information at this time.”
