Students of Kennesaw State’s strategic hospitality management course are working in conjunction with KSU C.A.R.E. Services to host an interactive event on healthy eating habits for high school students and incoming freshmen on Tuesday, July 10.
From 3:30-5 p.m., a group of 43 high school students and incoming freshmen will be attending a one-day summer camp about making healthy choices and forming healthy habits.
Leana Wallender, a strategic hospitality management student that helped plan the event, said that the event will start with an introduction along with a presentation about healthy alternatives to common snacks and drinks.
Event organizers will share nutritional values of certain foods for students to compare. Samples of the snacks will also be provided to students and attendees to determine if they can taste a difference between the separate foods.
Following the presentation, strategic management students will teach attendees how to read nutrition labels and what to be cautious of in terms of fats, sodium and sugars.
Wallender said that next, they will break the students into groups and perform a hands-on activity in making healthy snacks. The groups will visit different stations learning simple recipes they can use in their daily lives.
In the three stations, students will learn to make healthy meals such as homemade pizza rolls, fruit salad, smoothies and baked cauliflower bits with dipping sauce.
At the end of the event, they will ask students to fill out surveys, and they will hand out t-shirts and other gifts.
