The Muslim Student Association is a student organization at Kennesaw State and the only Muslim-based organization offered to KSU students.
The club plans religious, social, political, and cultural activities related to Islam as a religion and various Muslim cultures as a people to serve the needs of the Kennesaw community, regardless of their faith.
“Our goal is to create a community where Muslims can feel at home,” said co-president of the club Kumba Gaye. “We also strive to educate the student body about Islam and be part of the greater community that is KSU.”
According to Owl Life, the club’s motto is spreading peace through understanding, and through this motto, members strive to give Muslim students a place at KSU to come together. The club also aims to keep their legacy going through providing non-muslim students at KSU a platform to understand Islam in a better light.
“When I came to KSU, the MSA was my safe haven and I was grateful for the environment it provided for me. Joining the board was my way of giving back” Gaye said.
Members meet once a week during a semester and hold meetings that range from light and fun game-centered events to events that address pressing problems faced by the Muslim community.
In the past, MSA has held Hijab Day, an event where a discussion took place about the nature of the Hijab and feminism in Islam. The day of awareness also included a presentation about the empowerment of women in Islam.
Another important event held by MSA in 2015 was titled Islamophobia in America. The event held an open discussion that aimed to dispel myths and fears harbored against Islam, an important task and huge responsibility as the university’s only Muslim organization.
“Our events are open to everyone,” Gaye said. “We encourage them to join us at least one event.”
