Kennesaw State’s Writing Center is now open to help students hone their academic writing throughout the semester, starting with a workshop on Jan.16.
The Writing Center is a “peer-to-peer” tutoring service available to all members of KSU that want to become better writers and produce better writing. They offer in-person tutoring, online tutoring, workshops, events and handouts.
With approximately 30 students on a staff comprised of undergraduates, teaching assistants and graduate assistants, students are guaranteed to get the help they need. On average, the Writing Center has approximately 8,000 individual tutoring sessions a year.
Sara Omer, a senior English major and undergraduate writing assistant since fall 2016, as well as co-leader of Not Your Professor’s Book Club, said the Writing Center is a “good tool for students to boost their academic growth.”
“The Writing Center is a resource for students that builds confidence and supports academic growth in writing,” Omer said. “Ultimately, students leave the Writing Center as better writers who can more confidently write in their English classes and in their field. “
Omer also suggests going to the Writing Center to get a second pair of eyes on essays because “no one is a perfect writer, and no paper is a perfect paper.”
John Thornton, another writing assistant, said the Writing Center is effective because “we’re all students ourselves, and learn from mistakes. We can understand what it is like to need help as a student.”
The Writing Center will host Demystifying College Writing on Jan. 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. on the Kennesaw campus in room 242 of the English building. The workshop will help students get a better understanding of how to write at a college level and learn the importance of organizing ideas effectively, revising and editing.
The workshop will also be held on the following Wednesday at 11 a.m. and multiple times throughout the semester. A detailed calendar can be found online at writingcenter.kennesaw.edu.
The Writing Center is located on the Kennesaw campus in the English building, room 242, and is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Writing Center on the Marietta campus is located in the Johnson Library, room 121, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is closed Friday through Sunday.
Information on scheduling an appointment, workshops, events and clubs can be found on their website, writingcenter.kennesaw.edu.
