Police arrested a part-time accounting professor after finding him unconscious and intoxicated in the Carmichael Student Center on Oct. 5.
Kennesaw State police arrested Brent Christopher Allsup, 35, on three felony drug charges and an open-container misdemeanor count after finding him passed out in the student center around 10 p.m.
Police said they received a dispatch call from a witness who saw Allsup getting out of his vehicle and stumbling around the parking lot. When police arrived on scene at the Carmichael Student Center, they found Allsup sitting on the floor resting against a chair near the information desk, unresponsive and incoherent.
When Allsup was able to answer questions from the officers, he told them he had had 2 or 3 beers, as well as a muscle relaxant and a narcotic painkiller, before teaching class around 7 p.m. Allsup said the prescriptions were for lower back pain and mentioned he takes multiple prescriptions for other conditions.
Police said Allsup told them he left class at approximately 10 p.m. and was very tired from waking up early that morning. Allsup said he entered his vehicle after leaving class, pulled out of the parking spot and stopped immediately, believing he had struck another vehicle.
Upon examination, police said there was no recognizable damage to Allsup’s vehicle or any vehicle near where Allsup said he had parked.
Allsup gave police permission to enter his vehicle, where multiple prescription bottles, — one bottle prescribed to someone other than Allsup — a small container with eight unknown tablets and a single beer bottle were found.
The beer bottle was poured out and disposed of, and all prescription pills were taken into police custody. Allsup was transported to Kennestone Hospital.
Amanda Caixeta, a marketing major who was in Allsup’s Introduction to Managerial Accounting class, described Allsup as a “laid-back professor.”
“He was super nice but kind of disorganized,” Caixeta said.
Allsup taught part-time in the Coles College of Business’ School of Accountancy. He had been employed by KSU since 2010 but is no longer teaching classes.
In addition, he is a KSU alumnus, graduating in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting. He also received a master’s degree in business administration.
