The volleyball team went 1-1 over the weekend as they dropped a match against Jacksonville on Friday and got a win against North Florida on Saturday.
“JU outplayed us, out-competed us and outcoached us in every facet of that game, so credit to them for being so prepared and executing the way they did,” said head coach Keith Schunzel.
Kennesaw State started out rusty, as they went down two sets to none against Jacksonville. The deficit was too much to overcome as the Owls ended up dropping the match 3-1.
“We better learn from this game, because this is life on the road in a good league,” Schunzel said. “If you don’t show up 100 percent mentally and physically, you’ll get beat.”
The Owls took Schunzel’s words to heart when they faced North Florida on the road the next night. KSU won the match 3-1 as senior Katarina Morton became the all-time leader in digs at KSU and set a career-best with 24 digs against the Osprey.
The entire KSU offense was relentless Saturday, as they had three players finish with double-digit kills.
“We approached this entire day the way that championship teams do,” Schunzel said. “We learned from yesterday and mentally moved on… really proud of that response by our team.”
The Owls also had terrific production from some reserve players.
“Alex Huber and Karla Radillo came off the bench tonight and served well and made plays on defense,” Schunzel said. “And two freshmen, Karlee Groover and Lauren Chastang, had their best and most aggressive matches of their young careers.”
KSU improved to 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in ASUN play with the win on Saturday. The Owls will be back at home on Friday to play USC Upstate in another conference game.
