The Kennesaw State soccer team finished this weekend 0-2 after losing to Middle Tennessee State 2-1 on Friday and 2-0 to Furman on Sunday.
After a great start to the season, the Owls have hit a rough patch and lost three of their last four games. They will look to turn things around next week as they begin ASUN Conference play.
“We have to regroup. Obviously, when you lose two games you’re going to be down a little bit,” said head coach Benji Walton. “I told the girls these are good lessons for us going into conference.”
Kennesaw drew first blood against MTSU with a goal from the team’s top scorer, Ashtah Das, 10 minutes into the second half. MTSU quickly responded seven minutes later with a goal from Sam Debien, tying the game. Taylor Hatch scored from a corner with just five minutes remaining to propel the Blue Raiders to a dramatic late victory.
“I give full credit to Middle Tennessee,” Walton said. “They were well-organized and made the most of their opportunities.”
On Sunday, Molly Dwyer of Furman scored a pair of goals in the second half to hand the Owls their second loss of the weekend. She scored a header in the 58th minute and a close-range shot from inside the box in the 81st minute to give Furman the 2-0 win. The Owls struggled to find good scoring opportunities, having nine total shots but only one on-goal compared to Furman’s 15 total shots and 10 on target.
“We had trouble getting a hold of the ball as Furman did a better job of winning the 50-50 balls at midfield and made it tough for us to get a rhythm going,” Walton said. “I thought in the second half we did a much better job with the 50-50 balls, but needed to be a little more composed when we had our chances.”
The Owls begin conference play next week against USC Upstate at Fifth Third Bank Stadium Friday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m.
