Students get to enjoy a three-day weekend from Sept. 2-4 in celebration of Labor Day. This holiday honors the nation’s hard-working individuals from all occupations.
For students at the Marietta campus, stop by Marietta Square for “Art in the Park.” This once-a-year festival features various forms of art from over 175 local and national artists from all around the country.
In addition to the numerous restaurants along the square, multiple food trucks will be set up. The festival is completely free and will run Saturday through Monday. Tickets are available online at the official website.
For students over 21, check out Red Hare Brewing Company. Every Saturday from 2-6 p.m., the brewery offers tours and a sampling of six craft, Red Hare beers. Customers can bring their dogs along as well, and the brewery is only a short 10-minute drive from the Marietta campus.
Acworth Beach is about a 25-minute drive from both the Marietta and Kennesaw campuses. This is the perfect, local relaxation spot for swimming, kayaking or fishing with friends and family. For even more fun in the sun, Acworth Beach will be featuring the “world’s largest inflatable water slide” all weekend long from 11-6 p.m.
Cobb County will host the Celebrate Freedom 5k and 10k beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, and it is open to participants of all skill levels. Every runner will receive a free t-shirt and be able to partake in a post-race party. The race will take place at Jim Miller Park. Registration for the 5k is in the park from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday or online at active.com.
Atlanta will be hosting an array of events as well, such as the 30th annual DragonCon. As one of the largest popular culture conventions in the world, it focuses on science fiction, gaming, literature, film, costuming, comics and more. Special guest appearances include Marvel comic book king Stan Lee and Lena Headey, who plays Queen Cersei Lannister on HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
Watch the ensuing parade down Peachtree Street for free on Saturday, or buy a membership to access the costume contests, vendors, panels and autograph sessions. Memberships are available for purchase at dragoncon.org.
Zoo Atlanta will be open all weekend and offers student discounted tickets. Guests can see pandas, African elephants, orangutan feedings and much more. Tickets may be purchased at zooatlanta.org Use the username KENNESAWSTATE and password UNIVERSITY to access the student discount.
