Campus-wide initiative generates conversation about HIV and AIDS in Kennesaw
Organizations across Kennesaw State University plan week-long commemorative programming
Kennesaw State University (KSU) presents a week-long series of events in commemoration of World AIDS Day on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The World AIDS Day initiative at Kennesaw State University formed to promote conversation and awareness about the ongoing risk of HIV infections; according to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, youth constitute one quarter of all new HIV infections, half of whom do not know they are infected. The winter series is the first two-campus collaboration in response to World AIDS Day at Kennesaw State University.
Nov. 30 – Dec. 4: The AIDS Memorial Quilt
A selection of squares from this well-known public art project will be on display to commemorate those who have been lost to HIV/AIDS and raise awareness about the disease’s impact on the community. Presented by the Center for Health Promotion and Wellness; the Department of Museums, Archives and Rare Books; and Career Services at both the Kennesaw and Marietta Campuses.
Dec. 1: World AIDS Day – Kennesaw Campus
AIDS Memorial Quilt Panel Construction
Community members may participate in creating a panel for inclusion in the NAMES Project Foundation’s AIDS Memorial Quilt with materials and guidance provided. This interactive event is presented by Career Services and hosted at the Kennesaw Campus Student Center Leadership Room from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.HIV Testing and Resource Distribution
The Center for Health Promotion and Wellness and the Cobb & Douglas Community Service Board will provide free HIV testing and information on health and wellness resources available at KSU, including Counseling & Psychological Services. Testing is open from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Kennesaw Campus Student Center Leadership Room.
Film Screening – “Positive Youth”
Dr. Linda Johnston, executive director of the Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics, and Character, will facilitate a discussion surrounding this short film highlighting the experiences of four HIV-positive young adults across the United States. The event is hosted in the Kennesaw Campus Student Center University Rooms at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and a pizza dinner will be served.

Dec. 2: Film Screening – “We Were Here”
Dr. Linda Johnston, executive director of the Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics, and Character, will facilitate a discussion about “We Were Here,” a film exploring 1980s San Francisco as the AIDS epidemic unfolded, killing hundreds. The event is hosted in the Marietta Campus Building A (Room A216) at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and a pizza dinner will be served.
Participating Kennesaw State University organizations include Career Services; Counseling and Psychological Services; Center for Health Promotion and Wellness; the Department of Museums, Archives and Rare Books; GLBTIQ Student Retention Center; Gender and Women’s Studies; Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics, and Character; and Women’s Resource Center. All events, unless otherwise noted, are free and open to the public.
This series of events precedes the opening of “Art AIDS America” at the Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art. This nationally-acclaimed exhibition, originally created by the Tacoma Museum of Art, opens Feb. 20, 2016 as a multimedia representation of the ongoing impact of HIV and AIDS in American art. The Zuckerman Museum of Art is the only stop in the Southeast on its national tour.
