“Rachel’s Killin’ It” emphasizes community and social interchange in the contemporary art scene
News Release: Dashboard highlights five years of arts advocacy in “Rachel’s Killin’ It,” opening June 27, 2015, at the Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art (ZMA). Featuring multimedia works installed throughout the East Galleries and exterior of the ZMA, the exhibition presents eight artists whose work reflects risks taken both in their own practice and in their effort to support peers in the arts community. “Rachel’s Killin’ It” will be on view through July 26, 2015, and is the first exhibition in the annual guest curator summer series at the Zuckerman Museum of Art.
Guest curators Courtney Hammond and Beth Malone of Dashboard provide an introspective nod to the past and an eye to the future in “Rachel’s Killin’ it,” titled after a restaurant server who impressed the curatorial team during a recent brainstorming session. The exhibition encourages visitors to appreciate and empathize with the hard work and dedication of others, both those who work in the spotlight and behind-the-scenes.
“Rachel’s Killin’ It” will feature site-specific installations, including “Club MSIF” by Mike Stasny, a microdance club that explores human connections using the party scene as a medium. Also featured is Ben Wolf, a Detroit-based artist who will suspend an interactive 16-foot ring of fabric and light from the gallery ceiling to bring people together in a confined space. Other artists highlighted in “Rachel’s Killin’ It” include Mike Black, Lee Deigaard, Nikita Gale, Osman Khan, Melanie Manos and Nathan Sharratt.
In addition to the opening of “Rachel’s Killin’ It,” the Zuckerman Museum of Art presents “8-Bit Fictions,” an exhibition of paintings by Indiana-based artist Jason Lahr and curator Joe Thomas. Lahr employs humor and popular digital culture, including video games, to explore the intersection of art and technology. The exhibition will be on view through July 26, 2015.
The June 27 opening reception for “Rachel’s Killin’ It” and “8-Bit Fictions” features a DJ performance by Ben Coleman, with a set inspired by video games depicted in Jason Lahr’s paintings. The reception will be held 6 – 8 p.m. at the Zuckerman Museum of Art (492 Prillaman Way, Kennesaw, Ga. 30144) and is free and open to the public. At 8 p.m., visitors may join Kennesaw State University for music and fireworks as part of the community’s annual Independence Day celebration.
