College sports do not stop for anything, not even Atlanta’s ice fiasco. The Sentinel is here to fill in some things you may have missed over the week.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Athletic director Vaughn Williams announced that head coach Lewis Preston will return from his sabbatical at the end of this season. Over at the Marietta Daily Journal, John Bednarowski opined on the matter Wednesday, with lukewarm suggestions that changes are needed.
Caretaker head coach Jimmy Lallathin and the Owls (4-18) had their two away games this week pushed back a day by the weather. Friday night in Spartanburg the Owls look to grab a decent consolation for the ’13-’14 season by sweeping USC Upstate at 7 p.m. The Owls then play East Tennessee State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
FOOTBALL: Brian Bohannon and his staff presumably zipped around on snowmobiles all week in preparation for next week’s National Signing Day. On Thursday, Georgia’s high school player of the year, Griffin quarterback Jaquez Parks, committed to the Owls, capping a senior year in which he accounted for 45 total touchdowns and led Griffin to a state championship.
PLUMBING: Left behind in a kinder, less-icy Kennesaw of the past was news of KSU securing a sponsorship from Superior Plumbing. The deal, which gives naming rights to the loge level at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, ends KSU’s dark period of not having an official plumber. After running the sponsorship figures through the Sentinel’s official math machine, the 10-year, $1.5 million deal comes out to just over $400 per day. Refunds came out recently, so I suggest we band together as students and buy a concession stand or something.
WEEKEND SCHEDULE
A few other KSU teams emerge from their igloos this weekend:
- Women’s basketball plays at Mercer at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams are separated by just a single game in the bottom half of the Atlantic Sun standings.
- Golfers Jimmy Beck and Austin Vick start play in the Jones Cup Invitational on Friday in Sea Island, Ga.
- Both track and field teams travel to Winston Salem, N.C., for the Hilton Garden Invitational. Set for Friday and Saturday, the meet is the second of the indoor season for the Owls.
