KSU’s men’s baseball team fell to the 23rd ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday to the tune of 7-3, leaving the Owls 0-2 against their in-state rivals for the 2012 season.
A record crowd of 1,314 fans showed up to Stillwell Stadium for the game, breaking the record set last season between the same two squads.
Georgia Tech struck with a powerful offensive attack in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings with scoring frames of three, one, and three, respectively.
Trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Owls found some offense for the first time in the evening. Freshman Jay Bruce reached first on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Aaron Dobbs would then get hit by a pitch, and two batters later, Andy Almonte hit a double down the left field line to score Bruce.
In the next at bat, Ronnie Freeman hit a single up the middle to bring two more runs home.
KSU would not get any closer, recording one hit, without additional productivity, in the final three innings.
The Owls put six pitchers on the mound against the Yellow Jackets. Starter Kevin McCoy took a loss with five innings pitched, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, and registering three strikeouts.
Lead off hitter Aaron Dobbs had the best day at the plate for the Black and Gold, hitting 2-for-3.
Over the weekend, the Owls dropped two of three games to Lipscomb in Nashville, TN.
With the conference losses, the Owls are now 8-4 in the Atlantic Sun Conference Standings and 19-13 overall.
KSU currently stands in second place in the conference standings, tied with the Lipscomb Bison. Belmont leads the conference with a 10-2 conference record.
The Owls will play today against the Georgia Southern Eagles before hosting Alabama State at Stillwell Stadium tomorrow evening.
