This time next year, Kennesaw State will field a varsity team in women’s lacrosse.
The team will be the first NCAA Division I women’s team in metro Atlanta. But they won’t be the first team to represent Kennesaw in the sport.
KSU’s women’s club lacrosse team has been competing for five years and they have no plans of quitting when the varsity team starts playing. In fact, they plan on growing their program and expect to only get better as they gain notoriety.
Freshman Brittany Hughes came to Kennesaw knowing that the program was only going to get stronger as her career progressed,
“The varsity team will only bring in more talent to our team and help us get to the elite level of women’s lacrosse.”
The program enjoys a stable foundation built by head coach Ray Jones, who has coached the team since its inaugural season.
The 2012 season has been a transitional year for the Owls, who recently moved up to the highest division of the Southeastern Women’s Lacrosse League and compete against schools like Georgia and Florida State.
The team is currently sitting at 2-4 and playing only three more games, including a home tilt on Saturday, March 17, against Southern Mississippi. The transition period has been positive for the Owls despite the losing record.
“We played harder teams and we competed with them,” said Junior Brittany Sorrell, adding that the team attitude could be different.
“We have talent, we’re just too nice”. The Owls hope to get mean and finish the season strong with road trips to USC and UGA on the horizon.
Lacrosse is about to go through a big change at KSU next year, but the women’s club team will still be playing strong under the instruction of long time coach Ray Jones.
The varsity team may draw more attention next year but the women practicing under the lights every weeknight at the Owl’s Nest are the original lady lacrosse players at KSU.
