KSU’s men’s baseball team lost two straight to the Memphis Tigers in Memphis, TN., this weekend, dropping the three-game series.
The Owls had a three-game winning streak snapped in the second game against the Tigers, which they lost 5-0.
Previously, KSU saw victories over Virginia Tech, Alabama State, and Memphis, who they beat in the first game of the series, 11-7.
KSU’s loss on Sunday started with a three-run homer by Memphis’ Eli Hynes, who swung at the first pitch he saw from the Owls’ pitcher, Alan Busenitz.
Busenitz pitched 5.2 innings for the Owls, allowing nine hits and six runs.
Redshirt freshman Chris McGowan hit his first collegiate home run in the top of the third inning, and also was batted in in the fifth inning by Max Pentecost, who doubled to leftfield.
Memphis answered with three runs in the sixth inning to take a, 7-2, lead and eventually a, 8-4, win.
Memphis evened its record to 3-3 on the year, while the Owls fell to 3-4 with Sunday’s loss.
KSU will try to regroup before heading into a road schedule that includes games against in-state rivals Georgia Tech, Georgia, andGeorgia State.
The Owls’ next game will be in Atlanta, at Russ Chandler Stadium, to face the 11th ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech is 6-2 on the year after winning a series against Ohio State.
Another key non-conference matchup is scheduled for March 6, when the Owls will travel to Lawrenceville to play against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Gwinnett Baseball Classic at Coolray Field, home field of the Gwinnett Braves.
Georgia, ranked 9th, is currently undefeated at 7-0.
The Owls will meet the Yellow Jackets at 4 p.m. tomorrow. KSU won its last matchup against Georgia Tech, thanks to a bottom of the ninth inning rally that saw three runs come home for the Owls, giving them a dramatic, 7-6, victory.
KSU will also play a three-game set against Georgia State on March 9. After one road game in Atlanta, KSU will finally return home for the first time since Feb. 19 when they host two games against the Panthers on March 10 and 11.
The four-game homestand will be KSU’s last test before entering conference play against rival Mercer.
