RE: Kennesaw Pride Alliance presents: The PALS Benefit Drag Show

I am embarrassed to work at a school that would approve the Benefit Drag Show that passed out free condoms and then gave a full page in the school paper to show pictures and tell about the event.   Seems the degrading event hid behind the worthwhile PALS project.  This does not make it ok in my eyes.  Publishing these kinds of so-called “arts” events, indicates the moral decline and acceptance of it on our campus and in our country today. There are consequences that will bring about the downfall of the family and our society, as we know it.  Have we become so passive that we don’t even care anymore?  There are more vital and important issues facing us at this time in history. I expect to be blasted by those who think I’m a conservative radical but I need to express my view and stand up for what is right in my opinion.  If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, hopefully we seek after those things.

RE: Embrace the Fighting Owls

Every few years, there is a groundswell movement at Kennesaw to ditch the owl. I’ve seen this happen periodically since my arrival in 1978 and there are indications that murmurings for change can be heard again. I wrote a letter to the Sentinel on the subject in the early 1980s – here’s an updated version.

Before you ditch our mascot, consider the owl:

Not the bespectacled hootie-cutie owl of children’s books or potato chip bags, but the real thing.

The real thing – with outsized eyes that pierce the night, wing feathers uniquely sculpted for near-silent flight, asymmetrically placed ears for three-dimensional triangulation of prey careless enough to rustle a leaf on the dark forest floor. Then there is the weaponry – beak and talons of steel-hard, knife-sharp keratin. Talons that form a deadly cage as the owl swoops in noiselessly from above. Ounce for ounce an owl is a far more formidable predator than any of the cat/bear/wolf/orca/pirate alternatives – a fitting symbol of a mean, lean opponent. And if the “wise” reputation sticks, so much the better!

Violation of Disabilities Act

Is Kennesaw State in violation of the 2009 American Disabilities Act (ADA)?  According to this law, there must be one handicapped parking space for every 25 vehicles.  The West Parking Deck is in gross violation of this number.

According to school authorities, there are approximately 663 parking spaces in the West Deck.  This means there should be 26.52 handicapped spots in the deck.  Personally, I have driven for 40-45 minutes looking for a handicapped space in the West Deck.

It is ridiculous to have only two handicapped spots on level 3 of West Deck.  People with wheelchairs need these entrances to campus.  What happens if the only two spots are filled?  Already, twice this semester, the elevator has been broken.  Can the student go up/down the steps?  No, they return to their vehicle, reload gear, self, and chair back into the vehicle, drive for who knows how long to find a place somewhere across campus and then redo all unloading and start over again to class.
