University declares continued remote learning for May, Summer semesters

Kennesaw State’s Office of the President released a statement Thursday, April 2, that courses for May and Summer 2020 semesters will be held completely online due to COVID-19 concerns.

“KSU has been preparing for the possibility of a summer of fully online instruction,” the statement reads. “As a result, we are confident that more than [90 percent] of our in-person classes will simply be converted to online instruction for the summer. This announcement does not affect courses that are already scheduled to be taught online.”

KSU’s decision to move classes online came from guidance from the University System of Georgia. The USG has applied the decision to move Maymester and Summer semester classes online to all 26 institutions, according to the USG’s website on coronavirus updates. The USG is following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Georgia Department of Public Health.

As of publication, there are still plans for KSU and all USG institutions to operate normally for the Fall 2020 semester, given that the COVID-19 emergency does not last until then.

Beginning Monday, April 6, at 5 p.m., KSU will be allowing students that signed up for Maymester and Summer semester classes to review the revised offerings for these classes on Owl Express, according to the statement.

Internships and other off-campus activities students participate in for course credit “will follow standard procedures pending the needs and any special requirements determined by our external partners,” the statement said.

Some private institutions like Spelman College, Emory University and the Savannah College of Art and Design have not announced changes to their Summer courses.

As of Thursday, April 2, there are 5,348 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Georgia. So far, there have been 163 reported deaths due to the disease, according to Georgia Public Broadcasting.

There are no reported cases of COVID-19 at KSU.
