Sweet success for women’s golf players

Individuals from the women’s golf team are having successful summers so far, with tournament victories and personal achievements highlighting the off-season.

Senior Madison Caldwell qualified for the US Women’s Amateur tournament after finishing in second place at a qualifying tournament on Friday, July 6. Last season she won the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year and the individual conference championship. Her efforts also assisted the team in winning the ASUN title.

Earlier that week, Clara Aveling was selected to represent her home country of Belgium in the 2018 European Ladies Team Championships. Aveling had a successful year last season after coming back from an injury that had left her unable to play for several months. She has continued that success this summer with an event victory in Belgium.

“To represent your country is the pinnacle of pride for athletes,” head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. “She decided to come back better than ever and earned herself a national team selection for Belgium. I know she is very proud and looking forward to the event.”

Two more European victories this summer came from Charlotte Charrayre and Henriette Nielsen, who found success in their native France and Denmark. Nielsen, a recent KSU alumna, also came back from a significant injury earlier in her career and was an important contributor to the team’s success during her time. Charrayre won a second tournament of the summer on July 8, carding a final round 5-under-par 65 to come from behind for the victory.

Roanne Tomlinson won the Florida State Golf Association Amateur Championships on June 17, joining the likes of Cristie Kerr as a winner in that tournament. A first-team all-conference selection last season, Tomlinson continued her good form this summer with a victory at one of the oldest women’s tournaments in golf.

Medy Thavong, who played impressively last season, has also impressed in the classroom. Her 3.95 GPA while majoring in accounting has earned her a spot on the conference all-academic team. The 2016-17 ASUN Player of the Year is the type of exemplary student-athlete that defines the women’s golf team.

“What a summer the team is having,” Brinsmead said. “I’m excited for this momentum to flow into our 2018-19 season.”

The women’s golf team will seek to continue the success they have had this summer next season, attempting their conference title defense with three experienced seniors. Five of the six players on next season’s roster are retained from last season, making the cohesion between those players crucial in their efforts next season.
