POLICE BEAT

Whats in a name?
On March 7 at 9:20 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the University Villages Suites lobby in reference to an assault. He met with the complainant, a female who stated she had had an argument with her ex-boyfriend over money she had loaned him. As she was getting ready for work that morning, he packed his belongings to leave. She stated she wouldn’t let him go until he gave her back the cell phone he had that she was paying for. The female said that she began to feel his pockets for the phone and he grabbed her by the throat. When he released her, she ran to the bathroom and he left. The female advised the officer of where her ex-boyfriend and his two roommates live. Another officer called in to say that he had a suspect matching the description of the female’s ex-boyfriend, but he had given a different name; the female said that name was an alias he sometimes uses. The officer arrived and asked the male what he had been doing that morning. He originally denied being in the Suites, but when the officer told him they had seen him there on camera, he said he had been there. He insisted he was just visiting friends. The officer informed the male that he knew he had previously been arrested for giving a false name and date of birth. The male told the officer to “just take me wherever we are going so I can call my lawyer.” The officer arrested the male, who was taken to Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Scratch ‘n Steal
An officer observed a car with expired registration on Frey Road on March 15 at 11:34 a.m. Dispatch advised the officer that the car’s registration was valid through May 2013, though the only decal on the car was for May 2011. The officer conducted a stop, and the driver was surprised that her decal was gone. She stated that she normally parks in the Central parking deck and hadn’t noticed the decal was gone. Upon closer inspection the officer noticed scratch marks where the newer decal should have been.

How Not to Avoid Suspicion

The vehicle sped up and pulled into the Suburban Lodge on Busbee. The officer watched the vehicle speed through the parking lot. The officer followed and observed the driver get out and quickly make his way toward the entrance. When he approached the driver, he discovered that his license had been suspended since July 2011. The driver was arrested.
